The One Where I Don't Get A Global Phenomenon

I HEART LOVE FILM

I'll be honest. I didn't think this would be my sort of thing.

I love a foreign film, don't get me wrong - Let The Right One In and Red Cliff were "event movies" for me. I rush out to see that sort of thing.

Battle Royale, Ichi The Killer, Rec, I love it.

But this? This didn't appear to have any samurai swords, or explosive collars.

So... what did I think?

Well, I can see why David Fincher is remaking it. There is something very worthy about it.

But even though the Face Book film, thingy, hasn't got me very excited - this will be the longest run of Fincher films I've not been bothered by, for ages.

And that feels odd.

It got me thinking... what makes a film nasty? ^ This was pretty nasty, but I'd watch it any day of the week above "Tattoo".

This version of the film? Well, tell me about the book in the comments, please. Because I just don't see what the fuss is about.

As a thriller it's slow, and pondering.

As a murder mystery, it's slow and pondering, with big reveals, that just didn't resonate with me.

It just seems off the pace. And I can normally deal with that - in fact, I can really like that, but here? Well here, I was getting told it was a global phenomenon, (book and film). So I guess I had higher expectations.

It's also incredibly nasty.

Now, as a fan of Robocop, and the like, I can hardly sit here and say "I don't do nasty". But this is different. Mrs T was doing her school work, with headphones on, and one scene had her walk out in disgust - which then made me embarrassed I was watching it. Because I felt like following.

You can guess it was a rape scene, and I've seen plenty of graphic ones before, but this was nasty.

Then. Like in all revenge thrillers, she gets her vengeance.

And that's nasty, too.

I'll try and watch this again, before sending it off.

If I was wrong, I'll post again. If I was right, I'll be the one avoiding this particular "global phenomenon".

I eagerly wait comments at the bottom telling me the book is better. I'll try not to turn my lip/nose up.

Haven't seen the film yet, but I really enjoyed the book, after I'd gotten through the first 50 pages or so, which were kind of tedious background information, that did prove necessary in the end. I thought it really heated up at the end, but I did enjoy the general Swedishness of it too. Am about to read book 2. Will see if it keeps up the momentum...

The author died just before it blew up, that maybe one factor?

Hmm...

I'm tempted to watch it again, just because I have a nagging feeling.

The bit Mrs T walked out on Jax... I presume it's in the book?

Mike, you could be right. It's a bit like when JK Rowling died, and everyone suddenly loved Harry Potter.
