The One Where Thor Tops 2011

Finally, to make my Big Five... Thor.

With out over stating it, I think this could be my fave film of the year.

If they get the blend right, I think it could be a Classic.

The One Where Transformers Makes The 2011 List

OK. So on my list of five most anticipated movies for 2011, we have True Grit, The Ward and Black Swan.

There must be a big budget spectacular in there, though... right?

Well there's two.

First up is Transformers 3: Dark Of The Moon.

Ethan has watched Transformers 2 so much I've almost become an apologist.

I was trying to explain to MC on NYE  that I finally get why Ethan prefers it to the first one. Even though it's blatantly inferior.

It's the noise. The carnage. The non-stop action.

Sort of like Spiderman 3, which I also argued is the most "comic book" of the three Spidey movies.

I know, I know. I was drunk.

Transformers makes the list for a few reasons.

One, is that people forget how good the first one is. I think it's got Spielbergs stamp all over it.

Secondly, it's in 3D.

Don't even pretend seeing that in 3D and IMAX doesn't have you jazzed.

Plus it will have the soundtrack of the year. Fact.

The One Where Black Swan Makes My List Of Five

OK, so The Ward won't be for everyone, but its right up my street.

One that looks like a stone cold classic is Black Swan.

Darren Aronofsky is a genius.

The Wrestler blew everyone away. But Requiem For A Dream and The Fountain hit me harder.

Black Swan looks like it has the performance of the year from Natalie Portman. Plus Vincent Cassell, so good in Mesrine last year.

Plus, if he takes it far enough, the trailer suggests a sort of body horror, ala The Fly, one of my fave Horrors.

Putting Aronofsky in charge of The Wolverine may be the greatest thing to happen to superhero movies since Nolan met Bats.

The One Where The Ward Makes My 2011s Must See List

OK, True Grit was pretty obvious.

If it was released a bit earlier in the States, there would be mass Oscar buzz, I'm sure.

So now one you probably haven't heard of.

John Carpenter's The Ward (Oh, how MC loves it when a Director puts his name in front of the film...)

And it's inclusion is simple.

John Carpenter, who I wrote about HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE, is one of my favourite Directors of all time.

I grew up with him.

He went a bit mental, (and thus rubbish) in the 90's - and if I'm honest, I didn't think I'd ever get to see one of his films at the Cinema again.

2011 lets me do that.

Preview reviews have been average, but do you know what? I don't care...

It's essentially girls trapped in an Asylum. That may be haunted. Sold.

The One With My Top Five Of 2011

Having finished with my top five movies of 2010, I thought I would put up the films I'm most looking forward to in 2011. I'll run it this week, in no particular order.

First up is True Grit, which looks the real deal for me.

I'll take Papa to see it for his Birthday, as he's rightly bemoaned the lack of a classic Western since Open Range. (I still have all of Deadwood and haven't touched them yet. I'm not sure why. I'll remedy that in 2011).

The thing about True Grit is the Coens very rarely get it wrong. They've made some brilliant films.

I thought No Country For Old Men suffered from a bit of the Shawshank Sheep Effect, but I love how it tails off at the end. I just never saw that coming at all.

Jeff Bridges is having a decent spell, too.

I thought he was great in Tron: Legacy, and got the send off he deserved. Again, he got an Oscar as a token gesture for me. But I'd rather he had a token Oscar, rather than no Oscar, so I'm OK with that.

Matt Damon? If I thought about it properly, with Departed, Bourne, he probably overtook the far more work shy Ed Norton in my fave Actor list a while ago.

So this all points to a Classic. Well, that and the fact I've not seen it get below ***** so far...

Downside?

Well, I get the same vibe from the trailer that I got from Tommy Lee Jones The Missing. Which was meant to save the Western genre, and instead turned out to be shite.

Also, with two exceptions I can think of, I hate child actors. I know the girl is meant to be immense, but... I'm not sure.
