'Pour the milk and I'll say when' by @diaryofaledger

Remember The Word? Kind of dreadful Friday night freak show on Channel 4 hosted by Terry Christian?  Well because I was nineteen and easily amused, I used to watch it, but it did have one redeeming feature.  At the end of each travesty there was a band and the producers were well into the early Grunge scene. Many punters would have seen Nirvana for the first time because of it but the band I remember more is the Lemonheads and their performance of Mrs Robinson.  Evan Dando in a massive red furry coat, playing a brilliant cover of the Simon and Garfunkel classic.

The album, It's a Shame About Ray, is one of the most uplifting I've ever owned.  Dando, before the drugs took hold, had this kind of ethereal quality to him that was both charming and disarming.  A genuinely nice guy who suddenly and completely unexpectedly had fame thrust upon him following the success of Mrs Robinson.

It' an incredibly short album, no song is longer than three and a bit minutes but it's a lovely blend of folk, pop and grunge.  You can't help but smile at the tunes.  They remind me of great summers at home, driving around in a bright yellow Ford Fiesta, living without a care.

The lovely Juliana Hatfield is on loads of the songs, her beautiful voice blending with Dando's and there are loads of highlights.  Alison's Starting to Happen is a personal fave along with the brilliant Ceiling Fan in My Spoon.  Some of it's silly and almost throwaway, but there's just a hint of depth throughout and it's that and Dando's lost puppy thing, that makes the whole thing so endearing.  The Mrs Robinson cover is great but there was so much more to the Lemonheads than that.

The follow up, Come on Feel the Lemonheads, still had some of the magic and contains my favourite song of theirs, Into Your Arms, although not my favourite version which sits as a B-Side on the Mrs Robinson single.  It lasts a minute and half.

If you've never listened to them, they're worth checking out, but start with 'Ray', if you're feeling blue post New Year it'll put a smile on your face.

The One Where The Ward Makes My 2011s Must See List

OK, True Grit was pretty obvious.

If it was released a bit earlier in the States, there would be mass Oscar buzz, I'm sure.

So now one you probably haven't heard of.

John Carpenter's The Ward (Oh, how MC loves it when a Director puts his name in front of the film...)

And it's inclusion is simple.

John Carpenter, who I wrote about HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE, is one of my favourite Directors of all time.

I grew up with him.

He went a bit mental, (and thus rubbish) in the 90's - and if I'm honest, I didn't think I'd ever get to see one of his films at the Cinema again.

2011 lets me do that.

Preview reviews have been average, but do you know what? I don't care...

It's essentially girls trapped in an Asylum. That may be haunted. Sold.

The One With My Top 100 Of All Time

GC did his Top 100 songs t'other week, and said how much of a nightmare he had found it.

I said I didn't really have a Top 100, and that the order would change for indefinately.

Then I gave him my Top Ten as it stood on that day.

Then I thought... "You have a website, AT. Why not just post them up as they come to you. Number them, and when you get to 100, re-assess. Is there anything missing? Has anything dropped off? Why not get changed out of your PJs while you think about it?"

So, with 52 weeks in a year, I need a couple of these a week, I guess.

Lets start with one of my favourite songs of all time.

I wish I had written this.

This band have provided the soundtrack to my life for 15 odd years - and cover perfectly my relationship with Mts T.

They'll make the list a few times. But this is their best song, for me. (At least today.)

If you ever get to see Adam Duritz and Counting Crows live, do it.

The emotion he lays on is real.

As I experienced Xmas day, following his sad, lonely tweets.

Get back in the studio, please. It's been too long...

The One With My Top Five Of 2011

Having finished with my top five movies of 2010, I thought I would put up the films I'm most looking forward to in 2011. I'll run it this week, in no particular order.

First up is True Grit, which looks the real deal for me.

I'll take Papa to see it for his Birthday, as he's rightly bemoaned the lack of a classic Western since Open Range. (I still have all of Deadwood and haven't touched them yet. I'm not sure why. I'll remedy that in 2011).

The thing about True Grit is the Coens very rarely get it wrong. They've made some brilliant films.

I thought No Country For Old Men suffered from a bit of the Shawshank Sheep Effect, but I love how it tails off at the end. I just never saw that coming at all.

Jeff Bridges is having a decent spell, too.

I thought he was great in Tron: Legacy, and got the send off he deserved. Again, he got an Oscar as a token gesture for me. But I'd rather he had a token Oscar, rather than no Oscar, so I'm OK with that.

Matt Damon? If I thought about it properly, with Departed, Bourne, he probably overtook the far more work shy Ed Norton in my fave Actor list a while ago.

So this all points to a Classic. Well, that and the fact I've not seen it get below ***** so far...

Downside?

Well, I get the same vibe from the trailer that I got from Tommy Lee Jones The Missing. Which was meant to save the Western genre, and instead turned out to be shite.

Also, with two exceptions I can think of, I hate child actors. I know the girl is meant to be immense, but... I'm not sure.

The One With The First Vote Of 2011

It's always a big year, isn't it?

Next year will be bigger than this one, etc etc.

But has there ever been a better Premier League than this one? For the title run in, at least?

Lets kick this vote off, and seriously test whether it will work in this format...

Who Will Win The Premier League In 2011?

The One With 1-1-11

I don't feel much like writing.

I think I died last night.

Mrs T is being unbelievably forgiving.

She's let me go back to bed to watch Apocalypse Now Redux. (Then, during the 3PM games, I'll watch the Original on the 50, with 7.1).

There is bacon. And bagels. (Which I used to hate, but now love).

I really loved 2010. Ethan growing up, gaining a real personality. It's been brilliant to watch. I know I need to chill out more in 2011, and try to not let him pick up any of my personality traits I don't like.

So 2011s resolution is to take five seconds before reacting. In doing so, I hope I'll be less explosive.

We'll see.

Highlights of 2010?

A great year for my career. Some really smart choices made, and stepping out of my comfort zone.

As I said, a great year for Team Truscott. Ethan growing up, and Mrs T also excelling and growing into her job.

A Ledger wedding. So good that the faint sound of Biffy in the back ground wasn't an issue. Before that a Stag, ending with Biffy.

I managed to back away from twitter. (In 2009 I remember being really worried in December that I'd be spending more time on there than I would with my Family. Now I choose when to go on.)

The twitter pulled me back in for Tweetathon 2. £7K? Mental. Nice one, GC.

Biffy at Wembley, on a cold Christmas night in December.

Seeing 2011 in, at home, with Ethan being a part of it.

And then the Blog. Which I'll struggle to keep up in 2011. I know that. But that has served it's purpose up until now. And somehow... Somehow, out of all of that, being given the chance to write regularly for my favourite website. Awesome.

Expect more of the same in 2011. I'll go to the cinema a lot, this year.

I'll watch a lot of Blueys.

I'll likely get a 3D TV, too.

And I plan on writing about it all.

Happy New Year to you.

Gray was spot on with this being a highlight of his Top 100.

It was the first song I put on (loud) in 2011. After Mrs T made me move the iMac back into the conservatory.
